The Course

Ocean View Golf Course was originally built by World War I veterans in 1929.  In 1930, the Virginian Pilot wrote “Ocean View Course Rises from Marshland.” With a price of just 60 cents, Norfolk residents hoisted their golf bags, got onto the trolley and began play at Ocean View.

The 18-hole course was designed by golf pro Johnny Kelly and Fred Bingham, who provided oversight to the construction with Bingham eventually managing the facility for the city.   In February 1951, the present day clubhouse was opened.

Ocean View Golf Course is among Hampton Roads' most memorable and enjoyable golf courses, and is proudly managed by Virginia-based Billy Casper Golf.

Today, Ocean View offers golfers hybrid Bermuda greens and plushoak-lined fairways with many undulationsand dog-legs. Most of all, the course presents opportunity for all players to enjoy a fair test of golf, regardless of golfing ability - all at a reasonable price.

We look forward to seeing you at Ocean View Golf Course!

The Mermaid Tournament

The Mermaid Tournament was established 9 years  ago.  The  purpose of this tournament from the beginning has been to bring women golfers  from the Tidewater  area together for a  fun day of  golfing & fellowship and to, most importantly,  raise money for the chronically ill children in our area.

To date, the Ocean View Women’s Golf Association has donated over $25,000 to St. Mary’s Home for  Disabled Children and to Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital Children’s Foundation.

Today this tournament has become the premier women’s tournament in the Tidewater area. The tournament has been  held each June but  by March  the tournament is  filled to capacity with 140+ golfers. Over and over again we hear from our participants,  “if you only play one tournament a year you MUST play The Mermaid”.

June, 2015 will be our 10th anniversary of this tournament. Again we are looking for a full field as this year’s participants were already asking for applications for next year’s tournament. Look out for the 2015 date!
